In 2008, the Alaska Railroad celebrates its 85th anniversary, making it one of the state's oldest passenger and freight transportation services. Its history goes back even further if you include its predecessors, the Alaska Central and the Alaska Northern railways, which were organized in Seward in 1902. These are some of the Railroad's most dramatic historical photos gleaned from archives across the state. The insets of the vintage travel brochures show a colorful past, and are classic examples of how the railroad advertised the romance of Alaska and the railroad. That enthusiasm and love for Alaska and the Alaska Railroad has not dimmed over the years and people travel north today for the same reasons - to see Alaska's stellar scenery from the Best Train in the World.
