This photo was taken outside of Seward at Divide (ARRC milepost 12,) shows the amount of growth that is occuring in different areas along the track. The vegetation has grown up through the roadbed and has compromised the structural integrity of the track and roadbed.
Curves along a railine have tremendous force exerted on them becuase of the weight of the train and the sideways forces that push the train against the rail. This photo taken near Hunter (ARRC milepost 39) is another example of how weeds have taken over the railbed and are proving to be a potential safety hazard.
This photo was taken outside of Seward near Divide (ARRC milepost 12), shows the extreme weed growth that is occuring on many different areas of the Railroad. This type of growth presents a safety hazard for employees and train movement..
The Alaska Railroad is proposing to use the on-track equipment to apply weed control directly to the Railbed. This type of application is done by rolling the equipment on the track with the downward directed spray approximately 18 to 20 inchs above the area receiving the application. The equipment pictured will allow for such application. A licensed technician contracted by the Alaska Railroad Corporation will apply will operate the equipment.
