TOUR GUIDE PROGRAM

WHAT IS IT?
The Alaska Railroad Tour Guide Program was created in 1980 to provide workplace skills and exceptional jobs to Alaska’s young people. It is a school business partnership that is funded by the Alaska Railroad and local school districts in Fairbanks and Anchorage. This program is one of the most successful school business partnerships nationally and was awarded by the National Partners in Education in the 1990’s. Alaska Railroad riders from all over the country have written numerous positive letters giving the guides high marks for their knowledge, friendliness and quality customer service.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN?
Each year high school students are selected to participate in a 10 to 11 week high school elective course that teaches customer service skills, public speaking, CPR, First Aid, and Alaska history, geography, economics, current issues and biology. Tour guides receive rail pass privileges, have the opportunity to meet people from all around the world, develop lifetime skills, gain valuable work experience and have the possibility of future advancement with the Alaska Railroad.
