Seeking Artists for 2011 Commemorative Art Print

The Alaska Railroad Corporation is soliciting submissions for its annual commemorative artwork program. The selected artist will be commissioned to create artwork for the 2011 Alaska Railroad official print, poster, lapel pin and other gifts and materials. The annual Alaska Railroad artwork has become a favorite among rail fans and Alaska art collectors.

Ideas should be presented as a single thumbnail sketch no bigger than 11 x 17 inches, and may be done as simple conceptual sketches as opposed to fully developed final works. Photography and other mediums are welcome as well. All submissions, however, must have an Alaska Railroad theme in order to be considered. The Railroad has traditionally produced 750 signed and numbered prints, 4,000 posters and several thousand lapel pins.

The artist chosen to design the 2011 print will be paid $3,000, and be given 10 artist proofs and 20 posters. The artist must agree to participate in sale-and-signing events in Anchorage and in Fairbanks, typically organized in December (2010) or the following January (2011). The Alaska Railroad will pay for the artist’s travel expenses. The Alaska Railroad retains all and exclusive rights to the artwork. Alaskan artists are particularly encouraged to participate in the contest.

Mail or deliver the sketch to Tim Thompson at Thompson & Co. Public Relations, Inc. no later than February 19, 2010, at 445 West 9th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501. To hand-deliver a sketch, please drop by between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. A selection will be made by the end of March 2010.

A committee will review the submissions and the successful artist will be notified by telephone and by U.S. mail. The selected artist can request access to Alaska Railroad property for research purposes by contacting Corporate Communications Officer Stephenie Wheeler at (907) 265-2671. Safety is of paramount concern at the Alaska Railroad, and coordination is required before entering Alaska Railroad property.

Artwork that is not selected for the 2011 program will be returned to the submitting artists. In order to be returned by mail, submissions must include a self-addressed and stamped envelope. Artwork can also be retrieved in person between April 12 and April 16, 2010. If submissions are not picked up or returned by April 16, 2010, they will be discarded.

Other program questions should be directed to Thompson & Co. Public Relations, Inc. at (907) 561-4488 or email at
